The Children’s Book, by A. S. Byatt

March 15, 2010

Byatt is a genius. This is a grittily realistic novel with forays into the imaginative, magical world of the title character who writes children’s books. It is a story of childhoods, growing up and how the cultural movements of the day impact all the different people you will come to be fascinated by. The book takes place in the late 1800s through most of World War I in Great Britain. The characters are children and their parents in many different types of families in many different classes and situations — yet all of these people interact in meaningful ways and are left changed, as is the world. Beautifully written.
