Heft by Liz Moore

April 18, 2012

This is just the second book by this wonderful young writer, and it’s really worth reading. It tells the story of Arthur, a 500 pound former academic, and Kel, an 18 year old boy who is more or less raising himself.  The book deals with family and friendship and loneliness in a very profound way, and the author writes beautiful – the characters are so vividly drawn.  I really liked this book.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

April 12, 2012

Update: This book just won the 2012 Orange Prize for Literature!

This is a beautiful, sensitive retelling of the Iliad told from the perspective of Patroclus, with the focus on his relationship with Achilles.  The writing is beautiful. Fans of Mary Renault should definitely give this a try.
